BAD FOR THE BC ECONOMY
In the 1990s, the NDP drove British Columbia’s economy into the ground. It’s taken a long time for British Columbia to recover and make gains. As the global economy becomes more challenging and uncertain, the NDP would be a disaster for the BC economy.
- BC NDP opposed tax cuts:
Carole James doesn’t think tax cuts work. In fact, James’ NDP have opposed and voted against more than 100 tax cuts.
- BC NDP voted against balanced budgets:
Carole James’ NDP has voted against every single balanced budget introduced by the Liberals. Every year, they’ve called for more spending in an attempt to return BC to the operating deficits of the past.
- Turmoil for BC forestry communities:
Carole James says she will cancel the Softwood Lumber Agreement, eliminating all certainty for BC’s forest industry.
It would restore punitive export taxes of 40%, twice the amount of the current export tax, that would go to U.S. forest companies and claw back $2.4 billion owed to BC companies.
- BC NDP’s Hidden Carbon Tax:
Carole James supports a hidden carbon tax that would cost British Columbia businesses billions, which would be passed onto consumers. That's not good for the BC economy.
- Carbon tax double-talk:
Carole James claims she would maintain the 2008 tax cuts funded by the carbon tax, yet scrap the rest of the cuts as well as the carbon tax that funds them. Without this revenue, her first budget would be a deficit budget, unless she raises taxes elsewhere.
- BC NDP voted no to fighting the Mountain Pine Beetle:
The NDP voted against $642 million in provincial funding to fight the spread of the Mountain Pine Beetle. The NDP say they would use duties from the Softwood Lumber Agreement to assist beetle-impacted communities. Yet they’ve already said they plan to tear up the agreement. That's not good for the BC economy.
- BC NDP will kill BC energy sector jobs:
The NDP will cancel incentives that support summer drilling in the oil and gas sector, which would immediately reduce summer drilling by 50%, throwing hundreds of people out of work. Carole James would also raise royalty rates, putting in jeopardy the $2 billion in revenues the government received, throwing thousands out of work, and killing investment.
- BC NDP voted against small business:
The NDP said they supported tax cuts for small business, yet they voted against every tax cut introduced by the Liberals, including small business cuts.
- BC NDP are opposed to new investment in BC:
Carole James’s NDP oppose foreign investment in BC and have lobbied to stop further investment by companies from outside BC.
- BC NDP would scrap clean power projects:
In seven of the past 10 years, BC has been a net importer of dirty electricity from the U.S. and Alberta. Carole James’ NDP say they are for clean power, but have opposed every clean energy project in the province. They’re against all Independent Power Producers, even calling for a moratorium on every proposed project. The NDP oppose the 45 operating independent power production projects that are providing badly needed construction and operating jobs in rural and First Nations communities.
- A recipe for job losses:
Carole James supports the minimum wage policy of the BC Federation of Labour, which according to the BC Chamber of Commerce will result in more than $450 million in new costs to small and medium-sized businesses and the loss of at least 50,000 jobs across BC.
